Subterranean Termites are by far the most destructive termite species. Colonies have as many as 2 million members and in the spring, groups of reproductive swarming termites go off to start new colonies. They build distinctive tunnels to reach food sources and protect themselves from open air. They use their scissor-like jaws to bite off extremely small fragments of wood, one piece at a time, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Over time, they can collapse a building entirely, meaning possible financial ruin for the property owner. Each year, more than 5 million homes in the United States are damaged by termites and the estimated cost is a staggering $5 billion. What’s worse is that most homeowners’ insurance policies do not cover the destruction.
There are a few methods to help with subterranean termite control. The first is to avoid water accumulation near the foundation by diverting water away with properly functioning gutters, downspouts and splash blocks. Reduce humidity indoors with proper ventilation in crawl spaces, basements and attics to avoid attracting subterranean termite swarms. Maintain a one inch gap between the soil and wood portions of the structure and keep mulch at least 15 inches from the foundation. Never bury wood scraps or waste lumber in the yard and firewood should be stored at least 20 feet away from the home.
